The Science Of Motivation

The Science

We have figured out how to put a man on the moon and how to make cars drive themselves.  Surely we can figure out how to motivate ourselves to exercise.

The good news is we can!

For over 30 years, psychologists have been researching motivation and have figured out what works...

The Theory of Self-Determination

The Theory of Self-Determination pioneered by Richard Ryan and Edward Deci is the theoretical foundation of our program.  The main idea is everyone is looking for autonomy, competence and relatedness.  If you want to exercise more, you need to work these three components into your thoughts about exercise.

See below for more details or checkout their website at www.selfdeterminationtheory.org

The Theory of Self-Determination states that we are all looking for autonomy (choice), competence (mastery), and relatedness (belonging).
The more exercise supports these components, the more motivated we are to exercise.  Our program is designed to provide these for our athletes.

Autonomy/Choice
We provide a structured program, but allow athletes to have choice within the program. They can choose what exercises to add, as well as what exercises to change or remove.

Competence/Mastery
Too often in life our athletes are made to feel like they can't keep up.  From the beginning we setup our athletes for success. The first workout is completed in 10-15 minutes and already our athletes feel like they have accomplished something. Every set along the way we recognize and reward individual improvement.
Relatedness/Belonging
We all want to fit in. Our community provides a ready made support group that welcomes, encourages and loves our athletes.  Our community also values physical activity and a healthy lifestyle as well as provides role models to show it's possible to make a change.  This sense of belonging is invaluable.

There's a lot more to the science that you can read at www.selfdeterminationtheory.org

Start Small
Too often we fail to improve our fitness simply because we fail to start. In addition, we start with a massive new program and then get discouraged.  Our program starts small.  The first workout takes 10-15 minutes. By the end of the workout our athletes feel successful and are asking for more. They leave looking forward to the next workout.

We build by adding a new exercise every week, or whenever the athlete is ready to advance. Simple, but effective.

Build a Habit
The power of habits is well documented.  You can read about it here, here and here.

The main keys are focusing on consistency, frequency and sticking with it over time.

Our program helps support athletes creating a fitness habit.  We do this by encouraging athletes to workout at the same time everyday.  They can workout with a live instructor 3 times per week and workout everyday with a recorded video of their workout.
